Empowering Change: Reflections from the Point Source Youth Conference

Writer: Detroit Phoenix CenterDetroit Phoenix Center

Attending the Point Source Youth (PSY) Conference was an unforgettable

experience, filled with powerful discussions, inspiring speakers, and opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals who are passionate about Direct Cash Transfers (DCTs). DCT’s place power and resources directly in the hands of young people. As a member of the Youth Action Board (YAB), I was excited to represent our community and learn new strategies to enhance our advocacy efforts.

Key Takeaways from the Conference

1. Elevating Youth Voices

One of the biggest highlights was hearing from young leaders who shared their stories and insights on DCTs. It reinforced the importance of ensuring that youth have a seat at the table when it comes to decision-making and policy changes.

2. Transforming Trauma into Treasure

One of the most impactful sessions I attended was "Transforming Trauma into Treasure." This discussion focused on how we can create safe spaces for youth to grow by helping them tap into their inner strengths. The speakers emphasized the importance of compensating youth equitably while also providing them with financial literacy and life skills training to ensure long-term stability.

A key takeaway was the shift from fear-based power to collaboration-based power—instead of leading with control, we should empower young people to take charge of their futures. This approach helps clear the survival mindset that many youth experience, and allows them to focus on building sustainable, fulfilling lives. It was an inspiring conversation that reinforced how crucial it is to provide young people with not only the resources but also the training and support systems they need to thrive.

3. Networking & Collaboration

Beyond the sessions, I had the chance to connect with other youth advocates and professionals working in Youth Advocacy. Exchanging ideas and learning about different initiatives across the country was both motivating and eye-opening. It also sparked ideas on how we can strengthen initiatives at our own YAB.

Bringing These Lessons Back Home

This conference left me feeling inspired and ready to implement new strategies within YAB. From improving how we engage with our community to advocating for Direct Cash Transfers, there are so many ways we can build on what we learned.

For those who couldn’t attend, I highly recommend exploring the conference resources and considering attending next year.If you’re interested in learning more, feel free to reach out—I’d love to share more insights and transcriptions from the sessions I have attended!
